FIDE (International Chess Federation) is the global governing body for chess, and ECF (English Chess Federation) is the governing body for English chess. Their ratings are essential for determining a player’s skill level and are used for seeding in tournaments. You can read more about the FIDE rating system on their official website: FIDE Ratings and learn more about the ECF ratings system here: ECF Ratings.
To acquire a FIDE or ECF rating, you must participate in rated tournaments that are officially registered with FIDE or the ECF. You can find a list of upcoming FIDE-rated tournaments here: FIDE Calendar. Similarly, you can check out the ECF-rated events listed here: ECF Calendar.
FIDE and ECF ratings help organisers create fair and competitive tournaments by matching players of similar skill levels. These ratings are used for seedings in competitions, determining tournament pairings, and helping players identify their areas for improvement. ECF ratings, however, are specific to England and are used for domestic tournaments. Players may have both a FIDE and an ECF rating, but they serve different purposes depending on where and how you compete.
